For any author who tends towards exuberance, writing in short form becomes infuriating. You have to count words, cut here, trim there. And, ultimately, rein yourself in enough for the text to meet the demands of the publication.

Yet this minor frustration yields positive results. Forced to be brief, the writer is left with no choice but to weed out the superfluous from the essential. Renounce all flourishes and keep to what is truly important.

It’s an exercise in synthesis that demands discipline and rigour. Just like translation, a literary workout of the highest degree.
